Without Wisdom

I promised an update when I was feeling up to it, so here it is... Just don't expect it to be a smart post since I have officially had all my wisdom removed!

All in all I think things went really well yesterday. I have just a little bit of swelling in my lower left cheek, but essentially no pain. I haven't even been taking the pain medication that they prescribed me. I'm actually really happy that I haven't had any pain as the one pain pill I did take made me sick! I slept most of the day yesterday but I think it's pretty typical for post-surgery. I feel great today and wish that my dentist's orders weren't to pretty much sit home and do nothing.

I guess I do have a little tiny bit of pain in my right hand. I have small veins, and the poor sedation guy had a really hard time hitting my vein. He had to redirect about ten times. I don't mind redirects, but when I did phlebotomy I learned after three redirects you should take out and start completely over. I now really understand why. After about five redirects it starts to get really uncomfortable... even for someone like me. So I have some swelling and bruising in my hand.

So, the second to the last hurdle is done, and I just need to wait for all the paperwork to get to my bishop, him to send it to my stake president and the interview with my stake president. When I put it that way though, it still seems like there is a lot of work left to do!

Three Wishes

As part of a conversation I've been having with a friend, he asked me the age old question: "If you could have three and only three wishes, what would they be?" This time the question really got me thinking. I think it's a question that we usually just shout out answers to without really thinking about it. We find the three things that seem like they would be cool in the heat of the moment, but which really wouldn't likely mean much to us in the long run. So I thought... If I could really have any three things, what would I choose. Which things could I wish for that I know I wouldn't regret tomorrow, next year or even 50 years from now. I finally came up with three that I am pretty sure I would be satisfied with.

1. To always have the desire, strength and courage to do the things I know I'm supposed to do.
2. As cheesy a it is.... To find the best friend that could be my eternal companion and always be surrounded by people I love.
3. To be fearless in giving to others and sharing the gospel.

As I thought about these things being the things I want most in life, it occurred to me that these are great goals for me to strive for. The things I would wish for most in life are things that through time and patience and a lot of grace from God, I can achieve without any "magic" help. It is definite that none of them are easy things to achieve, but at least the first and third are things that I can achieve. The second is partially out of my control. I cannot control how capable and willing someone else is to love me, but surrounding myself with people I love is simple, I just have to love the people I'm around, and spend time with the people I love. I guess it all goes back to the gospel truth that we are each in charge of deciding our own happiness. No one else can determine that for us. I now have three new goals to work towards.

PS. Tomorrow is the BIG day! I'll post again when I'm coherent enough. Hopefully it won't be too long!

Mr. Fitting Room: Take 2

This seems to be the thing I blog about that interests people the most. Who knew that being asked out in the fitting room at Old Navy would cause so much hype?

I went on a second date with Mr. Fitting room last night. It was interesting. He had planned an Olympic themed double with his roommate, I'm not sure exactly what that was going to entail, but he said something about curling... Would have been interesting to see how that turned out, but the roommate's date fell through so the date will probably never be anything more than an idea... at least not for me.

Instead we went to the MOA (museum of Art). At BYU we aren't allowed to call anything by it's actual name. Everything that can be shortened will be shortened. It's like secret BYU code talk. Unless you're an engineer, then you don't need secret code talk to name your buildings because no one else is going to know where they are or come to them anyway. The MOA made for an interesting date. I somewhat enjoyed looking at the artwork, but I'll admit I'm not really artistically inclined and so it wasn't the most interesting thing in the world. I can appreciate that they can do something I'd never in my life have a chance at, but that was about all I had to say about most of the artwork. I'm sure I wasn't the most interesting date last night! After the art museum we got dessert and came back to my apartment to watch the olympics. That was by far the best part of the evening! I'll be so sad when the olympics are over, but at least I'll have more of a chance to get some homework done!

PS. The countdown is 6 days to torture, and then back to waiting. I HATE playing the waiting game!

A Weekend With My Dad and Other Updates.

Well, I've been on hiatus for a few days because my dad has been in town to cheer me up, and I was trying to spend as much time with him as possible while he was here. It was great to be able to spend some time with him. While he's been working at Disneyland, I haven't been able to see him much during my last several trips back to California. If only we hadn't had to schedule all our activities around my school and work schedule!

Mostly we spent our time watching the Olympics and touring Provo. It was a lot of fun to hear about what Provo and BYU were like back in the day... when he lived here. I can only imagine how different it will be in another 25 years or so when I have the chance to come back.... but in order for that to happen, I'll have to leave sometime. We also took a trip up to Heber to eat at the restaurant with the train. Neither of us had been there before, but I think that the conclusion was: good food, cool train and LOTS of people. In addition, I saw people ice fishing in real life! Weekend made. I can't think of a better way to spend my weekend than with my dad, and I'm looking forward to seeing my parents again next month! Maybe next time I'll have pictures... I don't get many of those on this blog.

As far as other updates... It would be too much of a pain to post updates for everything individually so I'm just going to put those here.

Paper Update

I finally met with a dentist yesterday and got my teeth cleaned. The appointment was long overdue... it's been nearly 6 years since the last time I saw a dentist. I go back next Thursday to have all my wisdom removed, so look for updates on that. It should be interesting to do that in the middle of the semester, but hopefully it won't be that bad!

Mr. Fitting Room

Poor guy probably would never have contacted me again if he'd known that was the nickname dubbed him by my dear family, but nonetheless, I got a text from him tonight, and a request to call me later tonight, so we'll see what that brings. I'm not expecting anything from it since my papers are nearly in, but he is a nice guy.

STAY TUNED!

The Gift of Friendship

I guess this blog is the follow up to the Paradox of Happiness blog posted several months ago.

I've been contemplating the last several weeks the value of good friendship. This comes as a a close friendship with one of the best people I've ever known draws to a close. This is the part of friendship I've never been good at... letting go when it's time to say good bye. In my ideal world, there would be no time to say goodbye. Friendships would always remain intact and people would just gradually increase their ability to care until it encompassed all they've ever cared about. I understand that there are reasons we don't live in my ideal world. It would be far from perfect, but it is my ideal nonetheless.

Having know for nearly the last month and a half that this friendship would soon be drawing to a close so that he could pursue avenues most advantageous to him, I have had an interesting opportunity to view the relationship in retrospect before its final conclusion. For me, it is always sad to see the ending of a friendship, but this one is especially sad because of the times that have been shared, the memories gained, and the lessons learned. I've never had a better friend. Good friendships force you to step out of your box and view the world from a different perspective. In my experience, friendships can do this in one of two ways. Friends can be the example of what you don't want to be, thus showing you what you do want to be, or they can be the example of what you soon come to learn is what you most want to have and be. Because the two are opposites, it may often occur that each provides one of the two experiences for the other making the friendship beneficial. It may also happen that since character is multifaceted, each provides some of both for the other to learn from. I hope that in some way this relationship has been as beneficial for this friend as it has been for myself. Through the wonderful example of this friend, I have learned much about who I want to be, and how to become that person. I've learned about my passions, my strengths, my weaknesses, and my gifts. I've learned something of my worth.

As easy and natural as it is to simply mourn for the loss of something that was so wonderful (and this isn't to say I haven't shed my fair share of tears over it)-it demeans the beauty of the friendship to focus only of the loss, and ignore everything gained over the last year and a half. To ignore the moments shared, and the knowledge gained would be an injustice. While many these are memories for only me to keep, I will say that I am extremely grateful- more than I could state in words- for the opportunity that we had to be in each others lives and to learn and grow from each other. God knows what we need and when we need it. As much as it hurts me now to be losing that friendship, I know that if given the chance, I would, without hesitation do it all again. Perhaps not exactly the same. Some lessons I had to learn I wish I could have learned sooner, it might have afforded more time for growth and even greater friendship. Regardless, I would do it again. It was worth every minute of it. That happy, the sad. It was all worth it, and the memories and growth gained from the friendship will be with me forever.

If I were to pick a song that matches my life right now, it would be Garth Brooks, "The Dance" It isn't a perfectly fitting song. I've had a pretty good idea for many months how this would end, and I would change the word chance to God. My life is better left to God. Aside from that, I think it's pretty well summarizes the sentiments of this post. You have to pay attention to all of the emotions in the song though. It's not just a sad song.

TAKING DONATIONS!

So now that the other hold-ups on my papers have been resolved (the doctor did finally give me permission, and wrote a long letter giving her recommendation that I have no limitations), there is only one thing keeping me from having my papers ready to go in....

DENTIST

I need to see a dentist, get X-rays and make an appointment to get my wisdom teeth out. Exciting stuff right? The biggest problem with this, is that I don't have the money to set up an appointment! So anyone willing to make donations is more than welcome to! I'm not going to make my February 15th deadline, but hopefully I'll find a way to get them in soon!

I'll provide more updates as things progress....

Love in the Fitting Room?

UPDATE:

The guy's name is Dane, he is an English major at BYU, and we are meeting for lunch on Friday. He also feels really bad for creeping me out when he asked on Monday. This should be interesting.... I guess it will be an adventure.

I thought I'd post this on here since I cannot share it with the person I typically would have shared it with first, and who would have laughed at and harassed me for it.This is something that he used to tease me about all the time, but last night it finally happened. A
customer in the fitting room asked me out on a date...

After two and a half years at old navy, I thought I'd seen it all... At least all of it that I would see. I've seen all kinds of things, I've seen co-workers hit on, I've seen co-workers swoon over customers. I've even heard stories about customers in the fitting room asking co-workers out on dates, but I never imagined that I'd be the one on the receiving end of a question like that. I'm not the super friendly, flirty customer service person. I try to be happy, hospitable and do my job to the best of my ability, but it's just not in my nature to be overly forward. It's not even really in my nature to be interested in ogling over a guy I don't even know. So when the question came last night it completely caught me off guard. The first thing I thought about was how funny Jake would think it was.

Thinking about it, I'm not really sure if I should feel flattered or creeped out. I guess it is Happy Valley Utah, but I guess I'm just terrified of dating, especially of dating a guy I don't even know. It was definitely worth a bit of a laugh though. Even if there was no one to share the laugh with. I guess it is getting close to valentines day... maybe that explains it.
